PROLOGUE EXCERPT for Greenhorn Filly in Texas
-----------

Once [Jack Duncan] reached the small General Store, he stepped from his horse and tied the reins to one of the wooden posts. As he ascended the steep stairs, he noticed a woman walking with a boy clutching her hand. Her eyes were red, and her face was covered in dust and tears. Her white bonnet had fallen to the back of her head, and her reddish hair was tangled in the strings. She looked like she was moving in a daze and wasn’t sure where she was heading.
“Poor thing,” Joe Brown said as he stepped to the door of his establishment, unconsciously rubbing the ends of his dark and scruffy mustache, contrasting sharply with his bald head. “She came in on the stage earlier this morning. Marauders had attacked the stage on the way from Cornerstone, killing her husband and one of the drivers yesterday. Luckily, there were two or three good hands with a gun, and the stage could make it to Prairie Water without further incident.”
Duncan apprised the woman as she continued to walk along the street. He looked at the boy, not more than eleven or twelve, with dark hair with a hint of red, but a strong chin set in determination. Duncan thought again, barely nodded his head to himself, and then stepped out to stop their progress as they came closer.
“Excuse me, ma’am,” he said, tipping his hat. “I wonder if I could talk with you a spell?”
